Dr. phil II Karen Maes is a clinical pharmacist and researcher. She joined the Institute of Primary Health Care (BIHAM) in September 2021 as leading lecturer and teaching coordinator for the master’s program in Pharmacy.
She graduated from the University of Basel and obtained her master’s degree and federal diploma as a pharmacist in 2012. She completed her PhD (2013-2016) in the Pharmaceutical Care Research Group at the University of Basel (Prof. Kurt Hersberger & Dr. Markus Lampert), with focus on seamless care and documentation of pharmaceutical interventions. Parallel to her research activities, she participated in writing for im@il-Offizin, a pharmaceutical information service for practitioners, and worked in a community pharmacy. Moreover, she obtained in 2015 her FPH Certificate in Clinical Pharmacy at the Cantonal Hospital of Baselland (Bruderholz).
From 2017 until 2021, she worked as a clinical pharmacist at Cantonal Hospital of Fribourg (HFR). Her principal activities were interprofessional visits on geriatric and neurorehabilitation wards, pharmaceutical care, development of services and teaching. To stay up to date with the community pharmacy practice, she is a member of the examination board FPH Offizin and an examiner of the federal exams in pharmacy.
